Factory Audits & Packaging Certifications: What to Verify in Asia

Before ordering packaging in Asia, brands should verify three layers: the factory's audit record across quality, social compliance and security; product-level certificates and test reports, such as FSC chain-of-custody and food-contact documentation; and whether those documents genuinely cover the product and production site. Emailed certificate photos prove little on their own; validity, scope and issuing-body accreditation must be checked at source.

The Three Main Audit Types

Quality Audits

Quality audits examine systems: how incoming materials are inspected, how work instructions and traceability operate, how non-conforming goods are handled and whether measuring equipment is calibrated. They can follow recognized frameworks or a brand's own checklist. A pass is a snapshot, not a guarantee; the findings and corrective actions matter more than the cover page.

Social-Compliance Audits

Social audits review labor practices, wages and working hours, health and safety and environmental housekeeping against frameworks such as SMETA or equivalent programs. Retailers often specify which standard they accept, so confirm your customers' requirements first. A report from an unrelated date or a different facility does not replace one covering the actual production site.

Security Audits

Security audits, including GSV- or SCAN-type supply-chain security programs, assess access control, container inspection, personnel screening and procedural documentation tied to import-security regimes. Whether one is required depends on your destination market and retailer. Ask early: these programs take time and cannot be arranged after cargo is already booked.

Certifications That Matter for Packaging

FSC and Fiber Sourcing

FSC chain-of-custody certification traces claimed fiber through every trading step, and a brand can only make an FSC claim when every link in that specific order's chain is certified. Verify the supplier's license code in the public FSC database, check scope and validity and match claim wording to the certificate. Other fiber-sourcing programs follow the same verification logic.

Food-Contact Compliance

Food packaging requires market-specific compliance: U.S. expectations center on FDA food-contact provisions; the EU applies its framework regulation plus specific measures and national rules; other markets impose their own standards. What brands actually need is a technical file — test reports from accredited laboratories, material declarations and a declaration of compliance — not a generic "food grade" stamp from the factory.

Recycled and Compostable Claims

Recycled-content claims require certified input records and batch traceability; "recyclable" claims only hold up where collection, sorting and reprocessing realistically exist at the point of sale. Compostability claims require testing against recognized schemes such as EN 13432- or ASTM D6400-type standards plus correct labeling. Unsupported environmental claims are increasingly treated as greenwashing and can draw enforcement action.

EU PPWR and Design for Recycling

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation moves packaging toward minimization, recyclability and controlled recycled content, with obligations phasing in through 2026 and later years. Brands selling into the EU should map which deadlines affect their formats and request supporting documentation early. Detailed PPWR planning is a separate workstream from factory selection.

How to Verify Instead of Trusting Photos

Use a five-step check. Confirm the certification body is accredited to issue the standard. Match validity dates, certificate number, company name and production address to the actual factory. Verify the number in the issuing body's public database. For test reports, confirm the laboratory is independently accredited and that the tested sample corresponds to your product. Finally, review the previous audit's corrective actions and confirm they were closed.

What to Ask for Beyond Paperwork

Request a live or recorded video walkthrough of the specific line making your goods, or arrange an on-site visit through a third-party inspector. Ask for pre-production samples, inline inspection records and a pre-shipment inspection at agreed AQL levels. Random or unannounced inspections reveal more than staged ones. The goal is evidence that the systems work on an ordinary production day.
